Karel IV. je dodelil mestu pravico, da samostojno sklepa zavezništva, s čimer je bil politično enakopraven s knezi cesarstva. Pogosti boji z grofi so povzročali trajno škodo pri razvoju mesta. Potem ko je bil leta 1420 grad v požaru uničen, je kot fevd med Friderikom IV.
